In a monumental leap towards India’s vision of defence self-reliance, the Indian Navy has sealed a ₹66 crore (approximately USD 7.5 million) contract with Odisha-based deep-tech startup Coratia Technologies on September 18, 2025. This landmark deal marks the first large-scale deployment of indigenously developed Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (UWROVs) into active naval operations, reinforcing India’s technological sovereignty in a geopolitically volatile era. With the global underwater robotics market projected to soar from USD 5.08 billion in 2025 to USD 9.53 billion by 2030 at a 13.39% CAGR, Coratia’s innovation positions India as a formidable player in this high-stakes sector.

A Game-Changing Partnership for Naval Prowess

Signed in the presence of senior Indian Navy officials, the agreement entrusts Coratia Technologies with supplying and maintaining its cutting-edge UWROVs, including the flagship Jalasimha and Jaladuta models, alongside the Navya Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV). These advanced platforms leverage AI and machine learning for real-time sonar-based mapping and analytics, offering dual applications in defence and civilian sectors. From naval surveillance and mine countermeasures to civilian tasks like dam inspections and subsea cable maintenance, Coratia’s robots deliver unmatched versatility at a fraction of the cost of imported alternatives.

This cost-efficient breakthrough underscores India’s ability to innovate frugally without compromising on performance. As Debendra Pradhan, Co-Founder and CEO of Coratia, stated, “This contract validates our mission-critical systems and reflects the Navy’s commitment to nurturing India’s innovation ecosystem through initiatives like iDEX.” Co-Founder and CTO Biswajit Swain added, “Our UWROVs reduce reliance on foreign tech, combat trade uncertainties, and unlock new avenues for India’s defence and blue economy.”

Coratia Technologies: Odisha’s Deep-Tech Dynamo

Founded by NIT Rourkela alumni Debendra Pradhan and Biswajit Swain, Coratia Technologies is a trailblazer in India’s deep-tech landscape. Incubated at NIT Rourkela’s FTBI, STPI Bhubaneswar’s Electropreneur Park, and supported by Startup Odisha and Gujarat’s i-Hub, the startup embodies the ‘Make in India’ spirit. Its accolades include the 2025 MeitY Sangam Conclave Rising Star Award, ELCINA’s Most Promising Startup, NASSCOM Emerge 50, Boeing BUILD 3.0, and Cochin Shipyard’s USHUS Program. A standout appearance on Shark Tank India Season 3 also secured an investment offer from OYO’s Ritesh Agarwal.

Beyond defence, Coratia’s UWROVs serve marquee clients like SAIL, Indian Oil, Indian Railways, and Tata Steel, enabling critical tasks such as ocean floor mapping, marine ecosystem monitoring, and disaster response. This dual-use capability positions Coratia at the forefront of India’s burgeoning blue economy.

Fueling Innovation with Strategic Funding

In July 2025, Coratia raised ₹17.4 crore (approximately USD 2 million) in a Pre-Series A round led by MGF Kavachh, with participation from Pontaq Ventures India. This infusion will accelerate R&D, strengthen intellectual property, and drive exports to capitalize on global demand for underwater robotics. Raj Sethia, Founder and Managing Partner of MGF Kavachh, praised Coratia’s potential to transform critical sectors, stating, “This investment fuels ‘Make in India’ and positions India as a global tech leader.” Col. Sarjeet Yadav (Retd.), Venture Partner, emphasized the strategic importance of reducing dependence on foreign technology during turbulent times.

Visionary Leadership Driving the Mission

Debendra Pradhan, Co-Founder & CEO: With a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering from NIT Rourkela, Debendra brings precision engineering expertise from his tenure at Mercedes-Benz R&D in Bengaluru and Germany. His early projects, including Formula SAE race cars, AUV prototypes, and a patented ornithopter, laid the groundwork for Coratia’s mission-critical platforms. He now spearheads commercialization and stakeholder relations.

Biswajit Swain, Co-Founder & CTO: A multidisciplinary innovator with degrees from NIT Rourkela, Biswajit’s expertise spans aerodynamics, mechatronics, and sustainable design. His experience at NTPC, SAIL, and Development Alternatives in Delhi and South Africa, coupled with projects like electric race cars and foldable ornithopters (patent pending), drives Coratia’s R&D and product development.

A Blueprint for India’s Tech Sovereignty

The Indian Navy’s partnership with Coratia is more than a contract—it’s a testament to India’s growing deep-tech ecosystem and its ability to deliver world-class solutions from Tier-2 cities like Odisha. By integrating indigenous UWROVs, the Navy not only enhances its operational capabilities but also sets a precedent for startup-driven innovation in defence. This deal mitigates risks from global supply chain disruptions and fosters economic growth through job creation and technology transfers.

As India navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, Coratia’s underwater robotics herald a new era of maritime strength and technological independence, aligning seamlessly with the nation’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.

  • Historic Deal: ₹66 crore contract for India’s first large-scale indigenous UWROV deployment.
  • Innovative Tech: AI/ML-powered Jalasimha, Jaladuta, and Navya for defence and civilian applications.
  • Funding Surge: ₹17.4 crore Pre-Series A to boost R&D and global exports.
  • Market Growth: Underwater robotics market to hit USD 9.53 billion by 2030.
