Shubham Soni launched The Fish Bowl in 2020 amid the pandemic’s delivery surge, transforming Mumbai’s seafood scene with a focus on sustainably sourced, farm-raised fish delivered fresh to homes. Operating as a direct-to-consumer service, the brand has expanded to online sales across Maharashtra, addressing supply chain gaps in a market where sustainable seafood demand grows at 12% annually, ensuring quality and eco-friendliness for enthusiasts tired of unreliable markets.

Coastal Calling: Shubham Soni’s Seafood Awakening

Shubham Soni, a Mumbai native with a background in fisheries management, grew up near the Arabian Sea, witnessing firsthand the challenges of fresh seafood access. After studying at the College of Fisheries in Mumbai and working in aquaculture, he identified the need for a reliable delivery service that prioritized sustainability over traditional wet markets’ inconsistencies.

“We saw an opportunity to connect ethical farmers directly with consumers, cutting out middlemen and ensuring every fillet reaches tables as fresh as the morning catch,” Soni explained in a 2022 interview with Seafood Source. His venture began modestly with a small fleet of refrigerated vans, sourcing from certified farms in Gujarat and Maharashtra to avoid overfished wild stocks.

Sourcing and Sustainability: The Heart of The Fish Bowl

The Fish Bowl specializes in farm-raised species like seabass, pomfret, and tilapia, all certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) for responsible practices. Products range from whole fish and fillets to marinated ready-to-cook portions and value-added items like fish tikka, priced from Rs 300-800 per kg, delivered within 4-6 hours of harvest.

The brand’s cold-chain logistics—using insulated boxes with ice packs—maintains quality, while partnerships with local farms support community livelihoods. “Sustainability isn’t a buzzword for us; it’s how we ensure future generations enjoy the sea’s gifts,” Soni told The Better India in 2023, highlighting zero-waste processing where byproducts feed farm compost.

At its core, The Fish Bowl caters to urban seafood lovers via an app and website, offering recipe guides and subscription boxes for weekly deliveries, blending convenience with education on eco-friendly choices.

Growth and Market Footprint

From initial deliveries in Mumbai’s suburbs, The Fish Bowl scaled to cover Pune and Thane by 2023, partnering with platforms like Swiggy Instamart for wider reach. Bootstrapped with Rs 50 lakh, the startup secured angel funding of Rs 2 crore in 2024 from local investors, enabling a second processing unit.

Revenue trends show steady uptake: qualitative growth from 500 monthly orders in 2021 to over 5,000 by 2025, driven by health trends post-pandemic. The brand’s emphasis on traceability—via QR codes linking to farm origins—has built trust, with repeat customers forming 60% of sales.

Challenges and Community Ties

Navigating monsoon disruptions and fluctuating fuel costs tested The Fish Bowl early on, but Soni’s pivot to subscription models stabilized operations. The brand also faced skepticism on farm-raised quality, countered through farm tours and certifications.

Beyond business, Soni mentors young aquaculturists via workshops, promoting women-led farms. This community focus aligns with India’s seafood sector, valued at $7 billion, where sustainable startups like his reduce import reliance.

Why The Fish Bowl Swims Ahead

The Fish Bowl matters by making sustainable seafood accessible, combating overfishing while nourishing health-conscious households with omega-rich options. In a nation consuming 8 kg of fish per capita annually—below global averages—such ventures educate and elevate standards, creating jobs in coastal economies.

Looking forward, Soni plans national expansion and B2B ties with hotels, eyeing Rs 10 crore revenue by 2027. His story—from sea-side dreams to delivery docks—proves passion can reel in progress. As Soni quipped, “Good fish shouldn’t wait for the tide; it should arrive fresh every time.”

In a world of fast food, The Fish Bowl hooks us back to the ocean’s pure bounty.
