Chennai-based drone startup Garuda Aerospace Private Limited, backed by cricketing legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has secured ₹100 crore in its Series B funding round led by Venture Catalysts, valuing the company at $250 million. Founded in 2015 by Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Garuda has emerged as a pioneer in India’s drone technology landscape, offering innovative solutions for precision agriculture, industrial inspection, surveillance, and disaster management. This article explores Garuda’s funding milestone, its strategic growth plans, and its role in India’s rapidly expanding drone ecosystem. Why does this matter? Garuda’s success, amplified by Dhoni’s endorsement and government support, positions it to lead India’s charge toward becoming a global drone hub by 2030.

A Milestone for Make in India Innovation

Announced on April 16, 2025, the ₹100 crore Series B round marks a significant leap for Garuda Aerospace, following its $22 million Series A in 2023 and a $3 million bridge round later that year. With a valuation of $250 million, up from $100 million in its Series A, Garuda is now India’s most valuable drone startup. The company operates a fleet of over 400 drones and 500 pilots across 84 cities, serving clients like Tata, Reliance, Swiggy, and ISRO with 30 drone types and 50 services. Its DGCA approvals for Type Certification and Remote Pilot Training Organisation, a first in India, underscore its technical prowess.

Garuda’s alignment with the Make in India initiative has fueled its growth. “This funding is a defining milestone in our journey to build world-class, indigenous drone technologies,” said Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder and CEO. “With Venture Catalysts’ support and MS Dhoni’s backing, we’re poised to scale manufacturing and innovation, contributing to India’s self-reliance in defense and agriculture.” Dhoni, an investor and brand ambassador since 2022, enhances Garuda’s rural and urban appeal, with his involvement spotlighted during PM Narendra Modi’s 2022 drone facility inauguration.

Strategic Use of Funds

The ₹100 crore will drive Garuda’s ambitious growth plans, focusing on four key areas:

  • Expanding Manufacturing: Garuda aims to double its production capacity from 8,000–10,000 drones annually by scaling its 24,000 sq. ft. Chennai facility and adding a 35,000 sq. ft. unit. It also plans to indigenize 85–88% of drone components, reducing reliance on imports.
  • Boosting Drone-as-a-Service (DaaS): A new drone aggregation platform, launching by September 2025, will connect service providers with customers for services like aerial photography and mapping.
  • Enhancing AI and Computer Vision: Investments in R&D will advance AI-driven features for precision agriculture, such as crop health monitoring, and defense applications like surveillance drones.
  • Global Certifications: Funds will support compliance with international standards, enabling exports to 50 countries, with $10 million allocated for global expansion starting in Sri Lanka.

Garuda’s 20+ patents and partnerships with Lockheed Martin, HAL, and Elbit Systems position it to lead in defense and agritech innovation. Its financials reflect this momentum, with FY24 revenue of ₹110.8 crore and a net profit of ₹15.8 crore, projecting ₹122 crore in FY25 and 2–3x growth in FY26.

Riding India’s Drone Boom

India’s drone market is soaring, projected to reach $15 billion by 2030, fueled by government initiatives like the Drone Rules 2021 and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Garuda holds a 55% market share in the $3 billion precision agriculture drone segment, with solutions like drone sprayers reducing manual labor and boosting crop yields. Its services extend to industrial inspections for NTPC and SAIL, surveillance for Smart Cities, and disaster management, including COVID-19 sanitization and Uttarakhand avalanche rescues.

The PLI scheme has spurred domestic manufacturing, with Garuda partnering with Tata, HUL, and Reliance for component indigenization. Its collaboration with IFFCO for 400 drone units and 10,000 pre-bookings reflects strong agritech demand. Apoorva Ranjan Sharma, Co-founder and MD of Venture Catalysts, said, “Garuda’s role in strengthening India’s indigenous defense manufacturing ecosystem and creating a global footprint excites us. We believe it will make India the drone hub of the world by 2030.”

Why Garuda’s Funding Matters

Garuda’s Series B funding underscores its leadership in a competitive drone market, rivaling players like DroneAcharya and Drogo Drones. Its asset-light model, with 30–32% gross margins and 24% EBITDA, sets it apart, while partnerships with HAL, BEML, and global giants like Thales enhance its defense capabilities. MS Dhoni’s star power, combined with his 2024 investment top-up, boosts Garuda’s visibility, especially in rural markets where 35–40% of the ₹500–600 crore agri-drone market lies.

The funding aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, with Garuda’s R&D center focusing on advanced defense drones like the Vajra and Trishul for riot control and surveillance. Its drone cities initiative, including a hub in Andhra Pradesh, aims to create jobs and foster innovation, supporting PM Modi’s Drone Shakti vision to boost agriculture GDP by 1.5%.

A Blueprint for Drone Innovation

Garuda’s journey from a five-member team to a 200-strong workforce mirrors the rise of bootstrapped giants like Zerodha. Its focus on empowering rural entrepreneurs, including women through PM Modi’s Lakhpati Didi scheme, sets a social impact benchmark. With plans to sell 25,000 drones and export 10,000 to 100 countries, Garuda is poised for global leadership. Agnishwar’s vision, backed by Harvard Business School credentials and partnerships with IIT Madras and ISRO, positions Garuda as a flagbearer for India’s drone ambitions.

The startup’s resilience, shown through its COVID-19 response and disaster relief efforts, reflects its commitment to societal impact. As India’s drone ecosystem grows, Garuda’s blend of innovation, scale, and government alignment makes it a standout, with potential to become India’s first drone unicorn by 2030.
